While the opening title reveal sequence and familiar Harry Potter music filled the screen at the start of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” I couldn’t help but feel a strong sense of nostalgia and excitement. As to be expected from HP film series veteran director David Yates and the screenwriting debut of author J.K. Rowling, this film contains just enough familiar material from the HP universe while making its mark with a new and exciting story that involves a fresh cast made up of Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Colin Farrell, Ezra Miller and Jon Voight, to present a thrilling and magical new experience for Harry Potter fans everywhere.
Written by fictitious author Newt Scamander, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is actually a school textbook that appears in the Harry Potter series. It is a directory of magical creatures that Harry and friends read while at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In 2001, J.K Rowling published an edition of the “textbook” to raise money for the British charity, Comic Relief, an organization that aims to “bring about positive and lasting change in the lives of poor and disadvantaged people.” Although Scamander does not appear in the original HP series and the textbook itself does not include a narrative, Rowling created a new story and screenplay for the film that centers on Newt Scamander’s adventures prior to writing the book
